It is one of the few naturally stocked lakes in the Tatras. The water is green and its transparency has been estimated by researchers to be 11-14 meters. The lake is also the most popular destination for Tatra Mountain excursions, and up to a million people visit the site each year. Morskie Oko is 862 meters long, 568 meters wide, and covers an area of 34.93 hectares. Its depth reaches up to 50.8 meters in the deepest point. Due to its location, the lake is frozen for an average of 157 days a year. It usually freezes in November, and the ice cover melts only in May.
