This place, unchanged for around 100 years, exudes a pervasive nostalgia, featuring winding alleys, steep staircases, walled courtyards, and arcades. The village has a ban on car traffic, meaning one can only reach its outskirts— all to preserve the historic character of its many buildings. Gandria is both a part of the city of Lugano and an independent village on the northern shore of Lake Lugano, situated right on the Italian border. It has a permanent population of about 275 residents.
