Lillafüred, Hungary: A Hidden Gem and Magical Resort Surrounded by Waterfalls and Forests

Nestled on the eastern slopes of the Bükk Mountains, Lillafüred is one of Hungary’s most enchanting destinations. Though officially part of Miskolc, it feels like an independent resort town—quiet, scenic, and full of natural wonders. Set at around 297 meters above sea level, where the Szinva and Garadna streams meet, this charming area lies within the Bükk National Park, the largest national park in Hungary. It is also part of the UNESCO-recognized Bükk-vidék Geopark, highlighting the region’s remarkable geological and natural significance.

Our walking tour begins at the Hámori Mászópark climbing area, surrounded by dramatic limestone formations. From there, the path leads to the 19th-century Church of St. Florian and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a modest yet historically rich landmark. Just a few steps away stands the Kohászati Museum, an extension of the Museum of Technology and Communication, offering a glimpse into the region’s industrial past.

As the trail climbs higher, Lillafüred reveals its iconic terraced gardens beneath the Palota Hotel. These beautifully arranged terraces offer panoramic views and lead to two of the area's natural treasures: the Anna Limestone Tufa Cave and the 20-meter Szinva Waterfall—Hungary’s tallest year-round waterfall. Even on a cloudy day, the cascade creates a mesmerizing contrast against the lush greenery.

Right beside the impressive Palota Hotel lies Lake Hámori, created in 1813 by damming the surrounding waters. Its calm surface reflects the surrounding hills, inviting visitors to enjoy boat rentals or simply relax by the shoreline.

The walk concludes at the LÁEV narrow-gauge railway station, where a historic forest train departs for Miskolc and neighboring villages. Watching the vintage locomotive pull away is like stepping back in time—a perfect ending to a peaceful journey through nature, history, and architecture.

This entire 4K walking tour, filmed in September 2025 on a warm but cloudy day, captures the essence of Lillafüred: serene, atmospheric, and endlessly captivating. Whether you're planning a trip or simply exploring from home, Lillafüred offers a glimpse into one of Hungary’s most beautiful corners.
