Zegiestow‑Zdroj, Poland - A Hidden Gem Between Mountains and Time

There are places that immediately impress with crowds, attractions, and noise — and then there are places like Żegiestów‑Zdrój. Quiet, almost hidden between the mountains of southern Poland and the Slovak border, this small spa village feels like a forgotten postcard slowly coming back to life. During our latest walking tour, we had the chance to explore its peaceful streets, historic buildings, and scenic mountain atmosphere in a way that felt both nostalgic and refreshing.

Our journey began at the old railway station, one of the first symbols of the village’s fascinating history. Built in 1876 along the picturesque railway line running through the Poprad Valley, the station still carries the atmosphere of another era. Trains passing through Nowy Sącz, Muszyna, and Krynica‑Zdrój make this one of the most beautiful railway routes in Poland. Even before entering the village itself, the surrounding forests, mountains, and fresh air create the feeling that time moves slower here.

Walking uphill along the narrow paths, we quickly understood why Żegiestów‑Zdrój has such a unique character. Unlike large and commercial spa towns, this place remains calm and authentic. The terraced architecture climbing the hillsides almost feels Mediterranean at moments, giving the village a surprising resemblance to small Italian mountain towns.

One of the most memorable moments of the walk was seeing the historic Hotel Wiktor. Once considered one of the most luxurious spa hotels in the region, it hosted elegant guests during the golden years of the interwar period. Like much of the village, the building suffered during World War II and later decades of neglect under communism. Today, however, it is slowly being restored, symbolizing the renaissance of Żegiestów‑Zdrój itself.

Further along the route, we visited the beautiful Roman Catholic Church of St. Kinga and continued toward the famous Spa House, one of the architectural icons of the resort. Surrounded by mountain scenery and silence broken only by birds and the flowing Poprad River, the entire experience felt incredibly relaxing.

The walk ended at the Anna Mineral Water Pump Room — the heart of the spa tradition that began nearly 180 years ago after the discovery of the Anna spring in 1846. Tasting the mineral water while surrounded by nature reminded us why people have visited this valley for generations searching for rest, health, and peace.

Żegiestów‑Zdrój may not be the most famous destination in Poland, but that is exactly its greatest strength. It is a place for slow travel, quiet walks, forgotten history, and discovering beauty without crowds. Sometimes the smallest places leave the strongest memories — and this mountain spa village is a perfect example of that.
